You would have to be living under a rock in a cave at the bottom of a ditch to not know that we are in a very important time for women right now. That’s why events like Variety’s 2016 Power of Women luncheon in L.A. on Friday was so significant. The event, co-sponsored by Lifetime, was created to celebrate and honor five powerful women in entertainment who have given so much to their respective charities. Actress Scarlett Johansson was one of the honorees for her dedicated work as an advocate for Planned Parenthood, a very hot topic in this upcoming election. In a video made by A&E Networks Johansson says she has had a long relationship with Planned Parenthood. As her mom always told her, when it came to her own personal reproductive health she had to be in charge.
“Planned Parenthood in a lot of ways is the only reliable and trustworthy option for a lot of people. Right now the threat of defunding Planned Parenthood seems more real than ever. A woman’s right to choose is a very personal one and should not be a political issue,” she says in the video. “Women are our own best advocates.” Watch the video and Johansson’s powerful message in the video above. Miley Cyrus, Helen Mirren, Ava DuVernay, and Laverne Cox were also honored for their charity work.
