Here we go into week six and this challenge is created for the Heidi Klum Intimates collection. It is a very straightforward challenge where the designers are told to create a look for her collection with no other specifications other than she better like it. This is an incredibly easy challenge, and it even gets easier when Tim announces that they can use a bra as a base. I really hope there is a last minute twist.
It looks like I will be disappointed when Tim and Heidi come in and critique the designers. Tim states that the designers are finding out that simple can actually be really difficult Umm…like maybe in design school?! This honestly should be a half-day challenge. It is hard to watch the designers struggle so much with such a straightforward challenge. Also, I thought it would have been a much more interesting challenge if there had been more fabric choices.
HA!!! I knew it! When leaving the workroom Heidi announces that she will see the designers in TEN MINUTES on the runway! However, instead of having to show their designs to the judges, they are given PJs, told they will have to create an additional piece and will have all night to do it. A designer slumber party! I would have loved this as a designer! You lose so much time each day from gathering all the designers, leaving the workroom to transporting back to the hotel and everything else involved in moving a large number of people. I would have loved to save all that time by just sleeping on the runway!
However, I am not sure how much the extra time helped the designers, as they all seem to be desperately working until the last minute the day of the runway. And as we will see, that extra time just allowed for more mediocrity.
Swapnil – I love the creativity of this garment and his model looks AMAZING in it!. However, you cannot deny that the craftsmanship is really missing. The coverup is dramatic, but does not look finished well.
Ashley – Her undergarments turned out beautifully. They fit well, have an interesting design and look like they would support women of all different shapes. The coverup is nothing special, but does appear to be well made.
Jake – His design was slightly boring, but made well. The bra had an interesting back with only the straps and no cloth, and the panties were equally well done but not well fit. The coverup, however, was a mess, with only a piece of fabric working as a sarong.
Edmond – Like Jake’s, this look was also a bit boring. The bra did not look especially flattering and the nude stripe in the middle of the panties just looked wrong! However, I will say that this was a major improvement from the initial design, and the coverup was well done.
Lindsey – Well done for the lack of time with her going to the clinic for a shot after her scissor cut. The bra had an interesting shape and I like the lace boy shorts over the thong (or at least that is what I thought was going on…). While I liked the idea of the “boy shirt” coverup, I thought it could have been constructed a little better and the color was awful.
Candice – I really like this look. I love the new garter belt she had where you can wear the garter belt without having to wear stockings, which are expensive and ALWAYS gets holes. I also thought the bra was on trend with the multiple straps. I could have done without the yellow though. I think it would have been sleeker being all black. The coverup looks exactly like everything else everyone has made.
Joseph – Okay, did everyone just use the exact same pattern for the coverup?! I have seen the same design on almost every model. The bra was cut nicely and I did like the added lace on the demi cup. The shorts made the bra and model look young and fresh, although agreed that they were a bit relaxed.
Merline – I loved the top and commend her on doing something different than the rest of the designers by not using the bra base given to them. The bottoms were not my favorite with the V shape cut right in the front. Again, like most of the designers the coverup looked like an after thought.
Blake – Wow, his model has a super body. You can tell the bra is not fit to be especially flattering, and yet she WORKS it! I do love the pop of color used in the look as well as the high cut panty. Like the designers before him, the coverup is awful.
Laurie – Finally a more dramatic coverup! I also like the high cut panty here, it was definitely more interesting then Blake’s with the added strap, but it might have been a little more flattering with a slightly lower cut. The bra looked a little heavy, but it fit the model well.
Kelly – I have to say, this is my favorite look from Kelly. I like the cape like coverup, although I think could have been more of a “wow” piece by making it longer. I also thought the top and bottom fit well. Unfortunately for all those positives, there was nothing especially interesting about the design. Add to that I am not a fan of the neon yellow and purple paired together.
The winner is Merline (no strong feelings about this), and Blake is sent home.
