In a world where a villainous cabal of haters have aligned against innocent women everywhere who want nothing more than to feed their children in peace, one lone hero is fighting back against evil.
Well, actually, a lot of women are fighting (and succeeding!) every day to bring the perfectly natural, perfectly wholesome practice of breastfeeding back into the public sphere after years of being trapped behind bathroom doors. Today, though, we saw one breastfeeding mom who is the subject of an image that underlines so much of what we’re feeling about the whole movement.
At the Alamo City Comic Con in San Antonio last week, Sara Campbell-Hernandez showed up dressed as Marvel hero Black Widow and, because her child Rowan was hungry, took a moment out to breastfeed him in public. Rowan’s Captain America shield covered up a little bit of the feeding. Otherwise, Campbell-Hernandez was out in the open and proud about the whole thing. Check it out for yourself below:
It’s an image that absolutely speaks to not only the strength of what moms do for their children (Campbell-Hernandez calls breastfeeding a “superpower”), but the bravery required to fight a misogynist legacy that’s tried to transform breasts into nothing more than male playthings.
With everyday heroes such as Campbell-Hernandez leading the fight with small victories like this, that legacy is quickly falling apart. It’s another win for the forces of good.
