Get ready to workout in 2017! This year may have been all about SoulCycle and yoga but next year will be a whole new game when it comes to working out (though those will both be popular too.) These will be the biggest workout trends in 2017.
1. Boxing
According to PopSugar, boxing will be huge in 2017 as more and more studios launch (ShadowBoxing to name one) and celebrities keep posting hot Instagrams of them in boxing gloves.
2. Fitness Apps
You may be still mourning ClassPass, there will be plenty of other fitness apps to get you through it like Kayla Itsines’s Sweat With Kayla, Aaptiv, Sworkit, and Nike Women’s NTC. And if you don’t feel like leaving the house, it’s no problem because you can just live stream your workout now! Try Tone it Up or Jillian Michaels’ Fit Fusion. Or if your apartment isn’t the size of a shoe box and you have some money to spare you can just buy yourself a Peloton bike and get a full spin class on in the comfort of your own bedroom.
3. HIIT Classes
HIIT it but don’t quit it! High-Intensity Interval Training — HIIT combines short bursts of high-intensity activity with short recovery periods. The workouts are often 30 minutes or less (that totally works for anyone with a busy schedule.) One study found that after only two months of HIIT, participants could bike twice as long as they could before the study at the same pace.
4. Megaformer
Known as “Pilates on Crack” this workout is insane. You’ll definitely be sore but your muscles will eventually thank you. The classes are based on the Lagree method, named for trainer and Megaformer creator Sebastien Lagree.
5. Crawling
Get ready to get down on all fours and start crawling. This is the new chic workout for 2017. Moving around like a baby basically resets your central nervous system and takes you back to the mobility patterns you learned as a baby (which are good for you apparently?)
6. Dance! Dance! Dance!
Dance Cardio will continue on its hot streak in 2017. People are loving these classes as it is more like going to a dance party than an annoying workout class. Try The COMPANY or 305 Fitness. Aerobics will also be making a comeback too. Find those old Jane Fonda VHS tapes. And then find a VCR.
7. Group Training
It is going to be all about you and your friends or coworkers working out together in the new year. Frankly, exercising with your buddies just makes it more fun! Studies show that people who workout with friends can go for longer and faster.
8. Yoga
Just accept it. Yoga is no fad, it is here to stay. Whether it is hot, done in the snow, done in a net or on top of a mountain, the benefits are numerous.
9. Wearable Tech
And speaking of things that will never go away, your FitBit is one of them. People are obsessed with numerical logs of their exercise accomplishments.
10. Poolbiking
This will be huge in 2017 and it is just crazy enough to work! It is a full-body resistance workout. Spin is already hard so imagine doing it in a pool!
