“Englewood is generally a place where no one feels safe,” says Tamar Manasseh. It’s not without reason. Of the many, many gun-related deaths that have earned Chicago a reputation as one of America’s bloodiest cities, Englewood is Chicago’s bloodiest neighborhood.
But Manasseh and the group she founded, Mothers Against Senseless Killings, are fighting to end the violence and change that reputation by doing the simplest of things—wearing pink shirts, grilling up some hotdogs, and giving out a lot of hugs. Thing is, all that softness seems to be working on at least one corner in this hard neighborhood. “You don’t want to underestimate the power of the mother,” says Manasseh.
