Following the Pentagon opening combat positions to women in December, the Senate followed suit by approving a bill that would require women to sign up for the military draft, or Selective Service, at age 18. Just like their male counterparts.
What this means is that not only are the roles that women play in society shifting, but the draft in general — something that has not been used in the United States since the Vietnam War — is coming back into the conversation.
Involuntary military requirement is definitely a powerful subject, but the good news here is women are finally being taken seriously for our role in the protection of the country, which can certainly be counted as a victory.
